Robin AI was a genuinely capable contract-review platform before its 2025 crisis: an AI assistant embedded directly inside Microsoft Word, backed by a human-in-the-loop managed-services layer, founded by former Clifford Chance disputes lawyer Richard Robinson and headquartered in London. At its peak it served 13 Fortune 500 companies, including UBS, PwC, and PepsiCo, running on AWS with GDPR compliance and ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certification.

The Word-native design was widely credited with removing a real adoption barrier in legal contract AI — lawyers could redline without ever leaving the word processor they already used daily, which is why Robin landed inside large in-house legal departments while browser-based competitors stalled at procurement. That product design remains genuinely instructive, independent of what happened to the company built around it.

The commercial picture changed fast. In late October 2025, Robin AI was reported listed on a UK insolvency marketplace following layoffs after a fundraise fell through. In December 2025, London AI-forward law firm Scissero acquired Robin AI's managed-services arm — nearly doubling Scissero's headcount — but explicitly did not acquire Robin's software or engineering assets. Per a secondary source (Pangea.app's glossary), Microsoft then absorbed Robin AI's engineering team in January 2026 specifically to strengthen Word's built-in legal AI features; Robin had reached roughly $10M ARR and a $16M pipeline but could not close a $50M round needed to cover multi-year losses.

As of this writing, robinai.com is still live and marketing normally. But Pangea's own FAQ is direct about what that does and doesn't mean: "The standalone SaaS product's continuity is uncertain," and existing customers are advised to verify support status directly rather than assume business as usual. That is the honest framing for anyone evaluating Robin AI today — not that the product is dead, but that a firm signing a new contract with it is buying into real, dated uncertainty about who supports it and for how long.

This is not a category-specific failure. Robin AI's collapse illustrates a problem the whole enterprise legal-AI market has to manage: expensive sales cycles, heavy implementation and managed-services overhead, and thin margins have strained even well-funded, Fortune-500-validated vendors. Every company in this space, HAQQ included, carries some version of that unit-economics risk; the difference is how each vendor is funded and structured to absorb it.

For a firm actually choosing a contract-AI tool this quarter, the practical takeaway is to ask directly: who supports this product in twelve months, and is that answer written down anywhere. Robin AI's own advisory language recommends exactly that verification step. HAQQ's answer is a platform built around drafting, review, matters, and billing as one system rather than a single-feature product layered with a human-review service, with pricing published rather than negotiated case by case.
