What Robin AI built before 2025
Robin AI was a genuinely capable contract-review platform before its 2025 crisis: an AI assistant embedded directly inside Microsoft Word, backed by a human-in-the-loop managed-services layer, founded by former Clifford Chance disputes lawyer Richard Robinson and headquartered in London. At its peak it served 13 Fortune 500 companies, including UBS, PwC, and PepsiCo, running on AWS with GDPR compliance and ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certification.
The Word-native design was widely credited with removing a real adoption barrier in legal contract AI, lawyers could redline without ever leaving the word processor they already used daily, which is why Robin landed inside large in-house legal departments while browser-based competitors stalled at procurement. That product design remains genuinely instructive, independent of what happened to the company built around it.
