People assume talaq and khula are the same divorce under different names. They are not. They differ in who initiates, the grounds required, and what happens to the mahr (dower) — and the rules vary by country and sometimes by the parties' religion.
Talaq is a divorce typically initiated by the husband. Khula is a divorce initiated by the wife, usually in exchange for returning or forgoing her mahr.
