A frontier model is a component. HAQQ is the system around it.

The useful question is not which model is smarter. ChatGPT and Claude give you access to an LLM. HAQQ gives you a legal system built on top of one, and almost everything that makes a legal answer usable happens outside the model.

What happens between the question and the answer

This is the difference, drawn. Everything a general assistant does is the first diagram. The second is what a legal answer has to pass through before it is worth putting in front of a client.

    A general assistant

    1. Your prompt
    2. Model
    3. Answer

    HAQQ, through Justinian®

    1. Your question
    2. Legal intent
    3. Jurisdiction and language
    4. Retrieve law and your matter
    5. Route to the right model
    6. Reason
    7. Ground and verify
    8. Cite
    9. Answer

Each extra step is a place a general model has no opinion. Asked about notice periods on termination, it does not know whether you mean the UAE, France or Ontario, and it will answer with equal confidence either way.

    01

Built for legal work, not for conversation

A general assistant optimises for one thing: what is this person asking, and what is a good reply. That is the right goal for almost every other use of AI.

Legal work needs a different opening move. Which legal issue is actually in play, which jurisdiction governs it, what language is that law written in, which sources bear on it, and how does the answer need to be structured to be usable in a matter. HAQQ resolves those before a model generates anything, which is what we mean when we say it approaches a request the way a lawyer does.

    02

    Confidentiality is an architecture decision

People do not use a legal assistant the way they use a general one. They upload the dispute, the client file, the internal memo, the strategy. The sensitivity of that material is a property of the work, not a setting someone forgets to switch on.

So encryption, access control, isolation between matters, anonymisation before processing and data residency are how the system is put together rather than features bolted around it, and the HAQQ terms governing a deployment exclude customer data from model training.

    03

    Many models, one system

HAQQ routes different parts of a legal task to different models based on what each is good at. A frontier model still performs the final generation, and we say so on the engine page rather than implying we trained our own.

What we own is the part that carries the legal value: orchestration, retrieval, jurisdiction logic, memory, guardrails and grounding. Those run the same whichever model sits underneath, so adopting a better or cheaper one is a configuration change rather than a rebuild.

That is also why frontier progress helps rather than threatens. A stronger model makes HAQQ stronger without making it redundant, because the layer that understands law is not the layer being replaced.

    04

The answer knows who asked it

HAQQ is used by practising lawyers and by people who have never spoken to one, and the same legal question deserves a different answer for each.

A lawyer wants authorities, reasoning they can check, risk analysis and language they can draft from. Someone reading their own lease wants to know what it means for them and what to worry about, in words they already use. The analysis underneath stays the same; the register changes.

A general assistant cannot make that adjustment reliably, because nothing in the product tells it which of the two it is talking to.

    Comparing one specifically?

Each of these goes feature by feature and quotes the vendor's own usage and security policies rather than our characterisation of them.

The questions this argument usually gets

Is HAQQ just a wrapper around ChatGPT?

No, and the honest version of the answer is more specific than a denial. A third-party frontier model performs the final generation. Everything that decides what that model is asked, what it is given to work with, and whether its output is allowed through is ours: intent and jurisdiction resolution, legal retrieval, matter context, model routing, guardrails, grounding and citation. A wrapper passes your prompt along. Roughly ten decisions are resolved before a model is called here.

If frontier models keep improving, does HAQQ still matter?

Better models make HAQQ better. The layers that carry our value run independently of any particular one, so a stronger or cheaper model is something we adopt rather than something that replaces us. What does not arrive with a model release is jurisdictional grounding, your firm's own knowledge, matter isolation, an audit trail or a citation you can open.

Which model does HAQQ use, and are you locked to one vendor?

We deliberately do not build on a single vendor. Justinian® is architected to route different kinds of legal work to different models, and the orchestration, tooling, retrieval, memory and safety layers are vendor-independent.

Can I just prompt a general model carefully instead?

You can get a long way, and plenty of lawyers do. What careful prompting cannot give you is a verified legal corpus behind the answer, enforcement of the jurisdiction you named, your matter documents in context, a record of what was consulted, or a boundary that keeps client material out of a consumer account. Those are properties of a system, not of a prompt.

So is this a comparison of HAQQ against ChatGPT?

Not quite. The per-product comparisons live on their own pages and go feature by feature with sourced quotes from each vendor. This page is the argument underneath all of them: a frontier model is one component, and the legal system built around it is the product.
