A general assistant that never claimed to be a legal one
Gemini is Google's general-purpose AI assistant, built into Google One AI plans, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Search, and the standalone Gemini app. It is worth saying plainly: Gemini makes no claim to be grounded in legal databases, case law, or jurisdiction-specific rules, and it would be dishonest to fault it for failing at something it never promised. The honest comparison is general AI assistant versus purpose-built legal AI, not an accusation.
That framing matters because a real advantage cuts in Gemini's favor for casual, non-liability-critical use: a far lower price, broader general-knowledge capability, native integration into everyday productivity apps a lawyer already uses daily, multimodal features (image and video generation, Deep Research), and a faster model-update cadence than any single vertical legal-AI vendor can match.
