    DoNotPay vs HAQQ

DoNotPay automated the parking ticket. The lesson from what happened next is the reason HAQQ grounds every answer.

    The Bottom Line

DoNotPay is the most recognised consumer legal brand there is, and it was genuinely useful at what it did: parking tickets, refunds, subscription cancellations, small consumer disputes. Then the FTC fined it $193,000 and barred it from claiming its service substituted for a human lawyer. That is the whole argument for how HAQQ is built. Consumer automation of a form is not legal work; legal work is grounded in real sources, tied to a jurisdiction and a matter, signed by a lawyer, and defensible afterwards.

    The claim that got tested

The FTC's 2026 action turned on advertising a product as a lawyer substitute without evidence it performed like one. HAQQ never positions AI as the lawyer. It positions AI as leverage a lawyer signs off on, grounded in statutes and case law with the citation attached.

    Consumer disputes, not client matters

DoNotPay automates a handful of high-volume consumer templates. HAQQ runs the matter: intake and KYC, drafting and review, research, time capture, and the invoice, in the same system.

    Grounding is the product

A consumer tool can guess and refund you when it is wrong. A firm cannot. HAQQ's Justinian engine grounds answers in real law, enforces the jurisdiction you set, and never trains on your data.

    What the FTC actually found

The FTC's complaint against DoNotPay centred on specific advertised claims: that users could "sue for assault without a lawyer," that the service would "generate perfectly valid legal documents in no time," and that it would "replace the $200-billion-dollar legal industry with artificial intelligence." The Commission found these were not adequately substantiated.

On 16 January 2025, the FTC finalized a 5-0 order requiring DoNotPay to pay $193,000 in monetary relief, notify consumers who subscribed between 2021 and 2023, and stop advertising that its service performs like a real lawyer without evidence to back that claim.

    A narrow product, still operating

DoNotPay's actual product has always been narrower than its old tagline suggested: automated templates for parking-ticket appeals, subscription cancellations, warranty and refund claims, and small-claims filings in specific US states plus limited UK coverage. It remains operational in 2026, with active user reviews on Trustpilot, and continues to serve that narrow, high-volume consumer-dispute niche.

That narrowness is also a real strength for the jobs it targets: a decade of brand recognition in fighting parking tickets and cancelling subscriptions is not nothing, and HAQQ does not compete for that specific consumer use case at all.

    The grounding argument, made concrete

The DoNotPay case is the clearest public illustration of the exact risk HAQQ is built to avoid: a legal-adjacent AI product that oversold what it could reliably do, without the sourcing to back the claim when tested by a regulator. HAQQ positions AI as leverage a lawyer reviews and signs off on, grounded in statutes and case law with the citation attached, rather than as a stand-in for the lawyer.

    Which one should you pick?

    Choose DoNotPay

    • You are a US or UK consumer with one of the specific disputes DoNotPay automates, a parking ticket, a subscription to cancel, a warranty claim, and want a cheap, templated way to handle it yourself.
    • You are not looking for professional legal representation and understand the service is a consumer self-help tool, not a substitute for a lawyer.

    Choose HAQQ

    • You are a law firm or legal team doing billable client work, which DoNotPay does not attempt to serve at all.
    • You need every answer grounded in real statutes and case law with a citation, not a template applied to your situation.
    • You work in Arabic or across multiple jurisdictions, neither of which DoNotPay covers.

    The verdict

DoNotPay remains a narrow, functional tool for a handful of high-volume US and UK consumer disputes, operating under an FTC order that bars overstating what it can do. HAQQ serves a different buyer entirely: firms doing grounded, billable legal work rather than individuals fighting a parking ticket.

Best for: US or UK consumers with a specific templated dispute; law firms and legal teams need HAQQ's grounded, practice-integrated platform instead.

    Často kladené otázky

Is DoNotPay a competitor to HAQQ?

Not really. DoNotPay serves consumers handling small disputes themselves. HAQQ serves law firms and legal teams doing billable work for clients. They meet only in that both put AI in front of a legal problem, and the FTC case drew a clear line about what you may claim when you do.

What happened with DoNotPay and the FTC?

The FTC settled with DoNotPay over claims that its AI substituted for a human lawyer, with a $193,000 penalty and a bar on repeating those claims without substantiation. The takeaway for legal AI generally is that output must be grounded and honestly described, which is the standard HAQQ builds to.

Can a law firm use DoNotPay?

There is nothing in it for a firm. It has no matter management, no billing, no legal research, no jurisdiction control and no multi-language support. HAQQ covers all of those in one platform.

Did DoNotPay shut down after the FTC case?

No. The FTC's January 2025 order imposed a $193,000 penalty, a subscriber-notification requirement, and a bar on unsubstantiated "performs like a lawyer" claims, it did not shut the company down, and DoNotPay continued operating into 2026.

Does DoNotPay work outside the US?

Its core coverage is the United States, with some UK availability. It has no Arabic-language support or MENA jurisdiction coverage that we could find, whereas HAQQ is built MENA-first with native Arabic and enforces jurisdiction across 200+ countries.

What is the actual lesson from the DoNotPay case for legal AI buyers?

That advertised claims about an AI product's legal capability need to be substantiated, not just plausible-sounding. It is part of why HAQQ grounds answers in cited statutes and case law rather than presenting AI output as equivalent to a lawyer's judgment.
